Dr. Puay Hoon Tan, MBBS, FRCPA, FAMS, MD, FRCPath

Dr. Puay Hoon Tan is a pathologist at Luma Medical Centre Singapore with active interests in breast and urologic pathology. She served as a Volume Editor of the 2012 (4th series) WHO Classification of Tumors of the Breast and was a Standing and Expert Editorial Board Member for the 5th series of the WHO Classification of Tumors, IARC, Lyon. She is on the expert editorial board for the ongoing 6th edition WHO breast tumor classification as well as the WHO-IARC-IAC Cytology series for breast and urologic cytology. She represents her organization on the IARC-WHO Evidence Gap Map Project for the WHO Breast Volume.

Dr. Tan is an Editorial Board Member for Modern Pathology and Histopathology, and Associate Editor for Pathology. She was the Series Champion of the International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting (ICCR)’s dedicated structured datasets for the breast suite. Beyond her clinical practice, which largely focuses on subspecialty surgical sign outs, Dr. Tan and her collaborators have secured research grants related to translational studies of breast and prostate cancer. She has authored approximately 600 publications and is a regular participant in regional and international meetings.

Her research interests in breast pathology center around the classification of breast fibroepithelial lesions and their molecular pathogenesis, triple-negative breast cancers, and ductal carcinoma in situ. In urologic pathology, she is engaged in prostate and renal cancer studies and contributed to the 2016 (4th edition) and served as an expert editor for the 2022 (5th edition) WHO Classification of Tumors of the Urinary System and Male Genital Organs.

Dr. Tan has held several prominent positions, including Past-President of the International Society of Breast Pathology (2013–2015), Councilor for Asia of the International Society of Urological Pathology (2009–2015), immediate Past President of the Asian Breast Diseases Association, and immediate Past Convenor of the Assembly of Asia-Pacific International Academies of Pathology.

In recognition of her contributions, Dr. Tan received the National Outstanding Clinician Award from the Ministry of Health Singapore in 2015. She was also honored with the SingHealth GCEO Outstanding Clinician Award, the Long Service Medal (National Day Awards), and the Singapore Society of Pathology – Becton Dickinson (BD) Award in Pathology in the same year.
